Case Study - Training and HR Materials

Comms has a huge amount of experience in this sector of the translation world. This has very much become one of our specialist areas, and we work for a number of the largest producers of such material in the United Kingdom and other countries.

There are a wide variety of topics covered by this area and some of them are as follows:

  1. Psychometric Assessments (Please see web page and the case study)
  2. TNAs
  3. Questionnaires
  4. E-Learning
  5. Soft Skills
  6. Cultural Awareness
  7. Negotiation Skills
  8. ECDL and other IT related training
  9. Coaching Programmes
  10. HR materials
  11. European Works Councils
  12. Contracts of Employment, H&S Materials and much more.
Training Programmes

As we work for many of the leading providers in this area, we are fully aware of the need for absolute confidentiality when handling our clients' materials. We aren't therefore able to provide the names of our clients, so what follows is a general description of how we approach such projects.

When handling training materials, it is vitally important that the translation is a completely faithful reproduction of the original, whilst still ensuring that the content is valid in the target market. We therefore work closely with our clients throughout the project, giving and getting feedback at all times.

We have our own unique methodology for handling such projects to ensure that the text is translated in the best possible way and we will be happy to discuss our procedures with you. We will then come up with a "best practice" procedure, which will cover your needs and ensure a very high quality translation.

Comms has built a large team of linguists in many languages, who have a great deal of experience in translating such materials. Our linguists are always on the lookout for anything that might not be legal or valid in the target market and we can then advise our clients about this. This can include such things as references to particular laws, names of organisations, names of people, currencies or maybe a type of sport that isn't really played in the country for which the translation is intended.

Once the translation has been finished, it is proof-read by a second linguist to ensure accuracy and quality. The project is then completed in one of the following ways:

Our clients use their own native speaker reviewers to check out the translation. These reviewers are often the people who will be leading the training programme themselves. We sometimes have conference calls with the linguists and the reviewers in order to discuss certain points before the translation is finalised.

OR

We provide back translations into English, using native English speaking linguists. Our clients' reviewers then compare the English original with the back translation to see if any nuances have crept in, which might affect results across borders. We then make any changes that the client requires and finalise the translation.

As we work with you over a period of time, we can build up glossaries of phrases and terms that are particular to your own requirements. This will ensure consistency in the vocabulary used throughout the projects.

In addition to the translation side, Comms can handle materials in a wide variety of formats, which means that you will receive the translations in their original file format, completely ready to use. We can also provide voice-overs with any type of voice, as specified by you, and sub-titles.

A word of advice

If you are putting together training materials, whether printed or E-Learning, and you are planning on having these translated at some stage, we recommend that you allow enough space for text expansion in the translated version. As an example, German text can take up to 30% more space than the equivalent English text. We will be happy to provide you with advice on this.

Multilingual Trainers

If you need multilingual trainers for your projects, we can provide this service for many of the countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. We can provide trainers with specialist skills, who can conduct training sessions in the language of the host country. Please send us your brief and we will locate the right people for you.

Quotations

If you would like a quotation, please let us have the following information:

  1. Which type of material do you need to have translated (i.e. Psychometrics, Soft Skills, IT, E-Learning, Financial etc)?
  2. Which language or languages will you need?
  3. In which format will the text to be translated come to us (Word, Excel, HTML, PowerPoint, Quark Express etc)?
  4. In which format would you like it to be returned to you?
  5. Please email/ftp the documents or E-Learning materials to us so that we can ascertain if there is anything else that we need to know, in order to give you an accurate quotation.
  6. If the translation that you require involves E-Learning, do you just need to have the text inserted into text boxes, or do you require anything like voice-overs etc.?
  7. If you also need to have Voiceovers done, we will need to know what your preferences for the voices are (i.e. young/old, male/female etc.)

Please contact us for a discussion about your particular requirements.
