Mobile phone technology is changing
all the time with new phone services coming on stream at
regular intervals. The major producers, such as Nokia,
Sony Ericsson, Philips and Siemens, offer their handsets in
many different countries in the world and all their
customers need to be able to set up their phones to access
the wide variety of services now available.
Comms has been working for these leading producers of
mobile phones by regularly providing translation of the
phone set-up instructions in anything up to 40 languages,
including such languages as Latvian, Punjabi, Chinese and
Tagalog as well as the standard Western European languages
such as French, German, Italian and Spanish.
Multiple languages - tight deadlines
The time to market is critical for any new mobile device
to ensure maximum sales time before the next new version
comes along, but at the same time, the documentation and
the handset programming has to be completed before a
language version can be launched.
As soon as the English documentation has been approved,
the translations are required, so we have a short
turnaround time of four days maximum. This is where the
Comms expertise in handling complex projects really comes
into play.
With a variety of documents in anything up to 40
languages and with a tight turnaround, we use our Project
Management expertise to ensure that the projects are
always delivered on time. A project of this size can
involve 80 linguists: 40 translators and 40 proof-readers!
Additionally, we don't just handle Word documents for
these projects - we also use our clients' Online tools for
the translations as well as providing translations in the
Java Editor.
Our timely delivery enables our client to carry out the
programming of the mobile device and to launch it on time
in the marketplace.
Translation expertise
The translators, whom we use, all offer expertise in the
vocabulary of the Telecoms industry. However, because some
of this technology is so new, the words don't all
necessarily exist as yet in some of the languages.
This makes these projects very interesting and
challenging for the translators as it puts them at the
forefront in helping to develop new terminology in their
own language.
In order to ensure consistency in the vocabulary used
in all projects, we use our state-of-the-art Translation
Memory system to build a translation memory, which can
then be used with all future projects, thus saving time
and ensuring quality.
