Comms Multilingual has specialised in the translation and
adaptation of all types of test, assessment and exam. We
offer expertise in both the clinical and
industrial/organisational areas for tests and assessments.
Please find as follows some information about a major
project in the clinical psychology area, which we have been
working on for a couple of years.
Our client is based in the USA and they have been
responsible for putting together and adapting a battery of
tests, which are aimed at testing the levels of cognition
amongst patients with schizophrenia. This is a unique
project and it has major sponsorship in the USA from both a
government body plus interested commercial parties.
Comms Multilingual was selected for the language
adaptation part of this project due to our expertise in this
area. The languages were German, Russian, Hindi and Spanish.
In addition, we provided an adaptation of the Spanish for
Spain version for use in Central and South America.
In order to ensure the success of such a translation and
adaptation project, we believe that the work carried out
prior to the start of the project is absolutely vital. We
used the unique Comms quality control and preparation
methodology, prior to the commencement of the translation
process itself, to ensure that the translators would have
accurate and clear information in order to enable them to
interpret and translate the text correctly.
Hint
It is important to allow enough time for this part
of the process within the overall schedule for your project.
Once this key process step had been completed, the
translation and adaptation process started. The translation
teams selected for this project were chosen for their
expertise in the translation and adaptation of this type of
material. They were qualified and experienced translators,
who also offered qualifications and practical experience in
clinical psychology. We always test out our translators
before using them and we take up references as well in order
to ensure quality.
We carried out the initial translation into the four
languages and then the translation was sent to an
independent proof-reader/editor for quality checking
purposes. Comms Multilingual is currently going through the
process of obtaining certification under the European
Standard for Translation and it is a requirement of this
standard that all projects should be translated and then
independently proof-read.
We submitted the forward translation into the 4 languages
to our client for review by their own experts. Once the
initial review had been carried out and the comments
handled, we moved on then to the back translation process.
The translation was carried out by a native English speaker
and proof-read/edited by a second linguist.
The next step was for our own in-house experts to carry
out our quality control procedures and internal checks. We
discussed queries with the forward and back teams and
produced a final version for our client's review. Our client
carried out a thorough review and we went through a couple
of rounds of amends until we had a version for final
checking.
As we had been through various rounds of changes with the
schizophrenia battery translation and adaptation, with
suggestions and changes coming from a variety of different
sources in each language and several different documents to
be reviewed, we created a glossary of terms in each
language. This enabled us to carry out a final linguistic
check to ensure that the key words and phrases had been
translated the same way throughout all the documents
involved and to deliver the final version to our client.
Note
In this particular case, our client had various
native-speaker expert reviewers, on whom they could call, to
assist them with the expert review process. If our clients
don't have access to their own native-speaker experts, then
Comms can provide independent expert reviewers ourselves.
In addition, we can provide typesetting/compositing
services in a wide variety of file formats. We will then
provide your documents back to you completely ready to
print.
