Case Study 6 - IT and Technology

At Comms, we have a great deal of experience in translating materials from the IT industry. The IT industry covers a wide variety of different areas and Comms is involved in the translation of materials for many of them. Here are just two examples of the types of project that we handle.

IT training

Our client, one of the leading producers of IT Skills training materials, asked us to provide the translation of basic IT training materials into Irish (Gaelic). We were provided with a script in English and we then had to translate the text for use as a voice-over, and also for use as a printed manual.

As is usual with our projects, we used a team of linguists for the translation side of this project. The document was translated by one linguist and it was then proof-read by a second linguist to ensure quality. The linguists, whom we used on this project, had previously been involved in helping to define the translation of IT terminology into Irish, so we knew that they were truly the experts in the vocabulary required.

After we had translated the script, we had to provide a native-speaker to record the script for our customer. The person we chose for the recording has a lot of experience in broadcasting and is often heard on Irish radio. In addition, we provided a language monitor, who was present throughout the recording to check for things like correct intonation and that the stress was on the right words within a sentence.

As the recording was taking place in England, we liaised with our client to sort out a suitable date for their recording studio and we sorted out all the travel arrangements. This training programme is now being used throughout Ireland.

Storage technologies

Comms is working with one of the leading companies in the area of back-up, recovery and archive solutions. This company offers solutions from the largest, enterprise-wide requirements down to storage solutions for the SME market.

The company in question wanted to provide particular support to their re-sellers and distributors in France and Germany and so we started out by translating the part of their web site, which was dedicated to their re-sellers and distributors.

Since then, we have been involved in translating a wide variety of documents for them. We have translated the materials that they needed for their stand at the CEBIT exhibition in Germany. We have done updates to the web site and we have worked with our client and with their advertising agency to translate their advertisements. Additionally, every month, we translate their newsletter and we also translate product specifications and data information sheets.

Our client is now providing video tapes for their distributors and re-sellers containing new product information. The requirement was for male, authoritative voices and Comms provided some sample tapes from which our client chose the most suitable voices for their requirements. We also provided the recording facilities and carried out the voice recording project.
