6th December / Finland Happy 96th Independence Day to all Finns! On the 6th of December Finland celebrates its declaration of Independence from Russian Republic.The day is a national public holiday. Traditionally the Finns commemorate the independence by lighting two candles on windows. During the war this was used as a silent protest against supposed Russian domination, and a popular legend tells that two candles were used as a sign to notify young men on their way to Sweden and Germany to become jägers that the house was ready to offer protection and keep them hidden from the Russians.
7th December / USA National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is observed annually on December 7th in the USA. The day is to remember and honour all those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The Flag of the United States will fly at half-staff until sunset in honour of dead patriots.
16th December / South-Africa The day of Reconciliation is celebrated on the 16th of December in South-Africa. It is especially important day; firstly because it commemorates the “Battle of Blood River” between Voortrekkers and Zulus in 1838. Also because on that day in 1961 the African National Congress (ANC) was formed.
