Sue and Karolina have just returned from the e-Assessment conference in London. There was a real buzz at the conference this year and there were a lot of attendees from other countries. On Tuesday evening, Sue and Karolina attended the Gala dinner and Awards evening with excellent food and lively company. It was great to see the winners and to hear about the achievements that led to their awards.
The main topics of conversation were AI and LLMs and how these can be used in the world of assessment. Item development seemed to be the main area that assessment and exam organisations are focussing on at the moment.
Some organisations are using LLMs to come up with ideas for new items in order to decrease the amount of time required for item writing. However, SMEs will still have a very important role to play in the whole item development process.
In the translation business, we have been using AI for years, so we are very familiar with the issues that arise from using this. AI and LLMs certainly have a role to play in the translation business, but it is notable that most of our clients ask us to guarantee that their translation projects will be done by humans!
