Our team had the pleasure of attending the International Test Commission (ITC) Conference 2024 in Granada, Spain. The event was a fantastic opportunity to engage with the latest in cross-cultural assessment and research, and we were thrilled to exhibit our services at this prestigious gathering.
On Tuesday, 2nd of July Granada welcomed us with extremely hot weather, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 40°C and evening temperatures not dropping below 35°C. Despite the heat, the conference offered a spectacular visit to the Alhambra palace and fortress complex. This exclusive tour for conference delegates on Tuesday evening was truly memorable.
Conference Experience
The conference, held at the Granada Conference Centre, was excellently organised, and featured a rich programme of presentations. The sessions covered a wide array of topics, including innovations in test development, translation/adaptation of tests, and the use of AI in psychometric assessment. The challenge of attending parallel sessions meant we had to choose between equally compelling presentations.
One highlight was the focus on translating and adapting evaluation instruments for minority languages and cultures. These sessions emphasised the importance of culturally adapted tests to improve the validity and reliability of psychometric assessments, ensuring they are accessible and effective for diverse populations.
Insights on AI and Translation
There were numerous presentations on translation and adaptation, including a notable session about the use of AI in translating website and platform text. While AI offers impressive capabilities, the consensus was clear: for high-stakes translations, human translation remains indispensable. The potential for AI in assisting with large volumes of text was acknowledged, but its limitations, even in high-use languages, were also discussed.
